THIS was an easy one!
In an ongoing effort to minimize chemicals in our home, I went after making a homemade carpet freshener and we BOTH loved it.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED.
1/2 c of Borax
1/2 c of Baking Soda
25 – 30 drops of your favorite essential oil
Tupperware Container for mixing (this is also what I use for storing my carpet freshener)
HOW TO MAKE IT.
I pour 1/2 cup of Borax into a Tupperware container (you could start with the baking soda if you want to), then approximately 1/2 of the oils, then the 1/2 cup of Baking Soda and the rest of the oils and then mix.
When you’re ready to use the carpet freshener, spread it throughout the household, let it sit for 10 to 15 minutes and then vacuum it up.
In our home, the teen has earned the privilege of vacuuming once a week. I spread the homemade freshener gave him the signal and then he got to work. When he was finished, he told me (unsolicited) that he felt the carpet was softer after one use of the freshener. In my corner of the world, this counts as a ‘rave review’.
One batch was enough to cover most of the carpet in our 1100 sq. foot apartment minus the kitchen and bathroom floors, we also skipped the entry stairs. We may not use the freshener every week, but after being in this space for almost eight months, it was important to tackle the odors my nose is sensitive to.
After one day of using the Do It Yourself freshener, I can still smell the Stress Away in every carpeted room. There was none of the coughing from film in the air that I’d previously experienced with store bought carpet fresheners. In addition to it being easy to make – with things I already had in our home from a previous DIY recipe – it has great benefits.
Have fun with this one – I’m thinking of turning this one into a gift later this year!
